Up to 200 People Possibly Exposed to Salmonella by Eating at the Firefly

Recall of Similac Powdered Baby Formula

A company that makes baby formula says it is recalling 5 million containers due to possible contamination by beetles or larvae of the bugs.

In a news release posted on the web site of the FDA Illinois-based Abbott Laboratories said that an internal quality review detected the “remote possibility of the presence of a small common beetle in the product produced” in one of its manufacturing facilities.

Evidence of Salmonella Outbreak Seen Earlier

The USA Today says federal health officials knew an Iowa egg company was likely a source of illness 2 weeks before they announced the major egg recall to the public.
The article explains that in July the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention “even considered reminding the public generally about the dangers of eating undercooked eggs” but “the CDC decided it would be more effective to wait until the Food and Drug Administration completed its investigation of the company, Wright County Egg in Galt, Iowa.”

Egg Recall Expanded

According to the New York Times, the egg recall has been expanded. The Iowa based company that produces the eggs broadened its recall from 228 million to 380 million eggs on Wednesday after some of the company’s facilities were linked to an outbreak of salmonella that has sickened hundreds of people across the country.
