Happy Veteran’s Day!

To all of our former and current servicemen and women I would like to give thanks for all of the personal sacrifices you have made and continue to make to protect our country and our freedom. I wish you all a happy Veteran’s Day and would like to remind you that you deserve every bit of praise for all that you do. The attached pictures were taken during the Veteran’s day parade that ran right in front of our office!

New study: Veterans more likely to be homeless

A new study says military veterans are much more likely to be homeless than other Americans, according to the government’s first in-depth study of homelessness among veterans. The study also says:

“About 16% of homeless adults in a one-night survey in January 2009 were veterans, though vets make up only 10% of the adult population. More than 75,000 veterans were living on the streets or in a temporary shelter that night. In that year, 136,334 veterans spent at least one night in a homeless shelter — a count that did not include homeless veterans living on the streets.”

Another interesting statistic in this study: 11,300 vets from ages 18 to 30 were in shelters at some point during 2009- and virtually all of them had served in Iraq or Afghanistan. An article in the USA Today says President Obama wants to end chronic homelessness of veterans and others by 2015. One way to do that is to make sure veterans are receiving the VA benefits they deserve. If you or a veteran you know has been denied VA benefits, call my office at 702-240-0000.

Veterans Helping Veterans

This new pilot program seems like a good idea. An article in the USA Today says the amount of returning veterans who get rehabilitation help from dogs will significantly increase if a bill becomes law.

It’s called the Veterans Dog Training Therapy Act and a Marine veteran recently elected to Congress introduced the bill. He says it’s all about veterans helping veterans. Here’s how it works: veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) would receive instruction in training dogs, then the dogs they train would go to disabled vets. The bill also encourages that the dogs come from shelters and has received an endorsement from the Humane Society of the United States.

The article says: “Dogs’ healing benefits have been proven repeatedly in the armed forces. Therapy dogs are making regular visits to military hospitals, and some have been sent to help troops in Afghanistan. Many vets struggling with PTSD or physical disabilities have received therapy or service dogs.” To learn more about the program, check out the story below.

My office is also committed to helping veterans and their spouses. If you’ve been denied VA benefits, call my office at 702-240-0000 or go to edbernstein.com.
