Students who drop out or skip class may risk driver's license and work permit

Created on August 5, 2010

The Las Vegas Review Journal says Clark County School District officials are trying to use driver's licenses and work permits to threaten teens who drop out or skip class. I found this article interesting because my office has been committed to teen driver safety in the Las Vegas community for years. National statistics show car crashes are the number one killer of teens, and my office has handled both cases were teens were injured in accidents or and when others have been hit by a teen driver.

Because students place so much value on getting their driver's license and being able to work, problem students between ages 14 and 18 could lose their driver's licenses or work permits if they don't show up for class. The article also says the parents of these students might have to attend classes on how to become better parents.

The issue as stirred up quite the debate. Critics of the proposal believe parents should decide if their kids drive or work, not the government. But supporters feel it would provide a good incentive for teens to stay in school and for parents to pay more attention to what their kids are doing. What do you think of the proposal?

Because teen drivers tend to be less confident and more distracted behind the wheel, my primary concern is making sure they stay safe and alive. If you are a parent or a teen driver, click here for a FREE Driver's ED sample test and all the teen driving laws in Nevada.
