Mobile Phones 18 Times Dirtier Than Toilet Handles

Created on August 24, 2010

This is pretty gross. But a new study out of the UK says cell phones are covered with up to 18 times more living bacteria than a toilet handle!

The article below says “the study tested 30 mobile phones for levels of potentially harmful bacteria, or the total viable bacterial count (TVC). High TVC levels don’t pose any immediate harm, but usually indicate poor hygiene.”

The study says of the 63 million phones being used in the U.K. about 14.7 million could pose a health risk, the report said. But the dirtiest phones can spread the dreaded staph bacteria, “which can cause everything from skin infections to meningitis. And where do these germs come from? Your hands and face. Why? Germs multiply in warm places. Between the heat the phones generate and the germs on faces and hands, you've got a bacterial breeding ground.”

The study says the best way to protect yourself… keep your phone to yourself and wipe it down with an anti-bacterial wipe from time to time!
