Your Nevada personal injury lawyer, Edward Bernstein, is currently assisting with lawsuits against Boehringer Ingelheim, the manufacturer of Pradaxa.
Pradaxa is a blood-thinning drug and has been linked to both internal and external bleeding that is hard to control. Once the bleeding starts, Pradaxa makes natural clotting more difficult. These type of events have even caused death in some patients.
In 2012, Pradaxa generated $1.4 billion in sales, and it is said that more than 1,400 patients bled to death while taking the drug. Currently, Boehringer Ingelheim faces more than 2,000 lawsuits involving Pradaxa. Families of those affected contend in lawsuits that Boehringer Ingelheim knew about the dangers of Pradaxa when it was approved for sale.
After its approval in October 2010, Boehringer Ingelheim gave U.S regulators data that stated the number of people who died from bleeding while taking Pradaxa was less than expected. The company did not provide other available data that showed a higher rate, which was found in a different study. This was revealed by internal documents made public in lawsuits over the product.
To further explain, when Boehringer Ingelheim analyzed Pradaxa, it produced two separate reports. The first report found that 5.8 out of 10,000 patients died per year, but only looked at those people whose primary cause of death was a major bleeding event. The second report found a rate of 19.5 fatalities per 10,000 patients within a year, and included those that died for any reason but also had major bleeding occur. Only the first report, with the lower number of casualties, was sent to the FDA.
