A 21-year-old woman died Saturday night after being hit by a taxi in downtown Las Vegas. This is the 19th traffic-related fatality this year in the Las Vegas metro area.
Las Vegas police said the crash happened at the intersection of Charleston Boulevard and Grand Central Parkway. A preliminary investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department determined that the woman was crossing east onto Charleston as a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado truck was beginning to cross westbound Charleston. Metropolitan Police Department Sergeant Robert Stauffer said that at the same time, a northbound taxi on Grand Central failed to stop at the red light and collided with the truck, sending the 2018 Toyota Prius taxi spinning into the woman.
Stauffer said witnesses told the police that both the pedestrian and the truck had the right of way.
The taxi driver, 30-year-old Kerihun Lakew of Las Vegas, remained at the scene. Stauffer said that neither driver was impaired at the time of the crash. No one was charged or cited in the collision as of Saturday.
Medical staff at University Medical Center pronounced the woman dead just a few blocks away from the scene of the incident.
A lengthy investigation is needed to determine the cause of the fatal crash, said Stauffer. The taxi driver could face charges of vehicular manslaughter if found at fault for the death of the woman.
