Bicyclist Killed in Las Vegas Hit-and-Run; DUI Suspected
A bicyclist was hit and killed in Las Vegas by what is suspected to be an impaired driver on the evening of March 6th.
The incident took place on West Tropicana Avenue, when a 2011 Dodge Challenger was headed westbound and struck the cyclist from behind. The cyclist was ejected from his bicycle and sent onto the north sidewalk, suffering substantial injuries.
The cyclist, a 60-year-old Las Vegas resident, was rushed to University Medical Center where he later passed away.
The Challenger fled the scene at a high rate of speed. According to police, witnesses followed the vehicle and were able to relay the car’s license plate and vehicle description to 9-1-1.
Police then drove to the address registered with the Challenger’s license plate and contacted the driver, who showed signs of impairment and was arrested on suspicion of DUI and hit-and-run.
The driver was identified by Police as Tyrrell Smith, 34, of Las Vegas.
The cyclist’s tragic death marks the 18th traffic-related fatality in Las Vegas Metropolitan Police jurisdiction for the year 2021.
