Police Officer Killed in Tragic Freeway Accident On Friday morning, a Las Vegas police officer was killed after a beam fell onto his car on Southbound U.S. 95 in the northwest Las Vegas Valley. Spokespeople with the Nevada Highway Patrol and the Nevada Department of Transportation said an overloaded construction truck carrying equipment hit an early warning beam, knocking the beam out of place and causing it to fall onto the sedan traveling behind the truck. The driver of the sedan was the only person in the vehicle, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. Investigators said the truck involved was not working on the Centennial Bowl construction and said they are still looking into whether or not the truck had a permit to drive through the construction area.  This incident closed Southbound U.S. 95 while the scene was investigated and crews began repairing damage, however, all lanes were reopened later Friday evening. Steve Grammas, president of the LVPPA, said the man killed was a police officer with the Las Vegas Metro Police Department, providing the following statement: “Today is a very sad and tragic day for the men and women of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. In a tragic accident on the freeway, one of our own lost their life. Not only is this loss felt by all first responders in Nevada, but the community at large has also lost one of its heroes. We pray for strength and comfort for our fallen brother’s family and friends as well as our entire community.” At the request of the family, the Injured Police Officers Fund is the only approved donation point.
